In a meaningful tribute to the International Day of Peace (September 21st), the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten Mid Isle proudly planted its first “Peace Pole” at St. Dominic High School on Tuesday, October 28th.
The unveiling ceremony was led by special guest District 7020 Governor William “Bill” Aiken and Interact President of St. Dominic High School, Tanya Halley. Their joint participation symbolized a powerful commitment to Rotary’s mission of fostering a culture of peace both locally and globally.
A Peace Pole is a globally recognized monument that bears the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in the language of the host country, along with several other languages that hold significance to the community. The Peace Pole at St. Dominic High School features this message in English, Dutch, French, and Spanish.
Originating from Japan, the Peace Pole movement was initiated by the late Masahisa Goi following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Today, more than 250,000 Peace Poles stand in nearly every country around the world, serving as enduring symbols of hope, unity, and peace.
The Rotary Club of Sint Maarten Mid Isle remains steadfast in its dedication to promoting peace and understanding, echoing Rotary International’s broader vision of a more harmonious world.
